Inside a ROMAIN barbershop in Ghent

Three places. One standard.

Every location
has a story.

Different character.
The same attention.

Each ROMAIN barbershop has its own atmosphere, interior and history. What never changes is the time, precision and personal care given to every appointment.

01 · Headquarters · Est. 2014

Where ROMAIN
began.

From a storage room and a converted garage to the original ROMAIN house: small in scale, exact in purpose and full of the energy that started everything.

The original ROMAIN Headquarters

A garage transformed into a standard.

Stijn De Sutter’s path into barbering began in 2014, while he was still working as a nurse. Friends first came to a small storage room in his apartment — not only for a haircut, but for a listening ear and a moment to slow down.

A garage was stripped and rebuilt into the first shop. Its London-inspired metro tiles, custom workbench made from old birch beams and carefully planned workflow reflect the same idea: every detail must serve the client and the craft.

Headquarters remains the heart of ROMAIN. Appointments are limited so attention never has to be rushed.

02 · Yvonne · Est. 2021

Quality meets
culture.

Natural light, dark green tones, historic shelving and a private atmosphere where barbering, cigars and fine spirits meet.

ROMAIN Yvonne interior

A tribute with a character of its own.

Yvonne opened as ROMAIN’s second location when the original house needed room to grow. The corner setting brings openness and natural light, while deep green tones and shelving from the Dovo razor factory in Solingen — dating to 1910 — give the interior its timeless character.

The name honours Yvonne Delcourt, wife of the late Ghent actor and playwright Romain Deconinck. Her presence and emotion when the location opened remain part of the spirit of the place.

Yvonne is designed for full attention: a haircut, a warm-towel shave, a premium cigar or a special occasion — always by appointment, always without interruption.

03 · Coupure · Est. 1884

History is still
at work.

The oldest continuously operating barbershop in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg — and a living classroom for the craft.

Historic ROMAIN Coupure barbershop

A living museum — never frozen in time.

The interior’s story reaches back to 1820, when it stood in Barber Schauvlieghe’s salon on the Veldstraat. In 1884 it moved to Coupure, where generations of barbers continued working behind its chairs.

Barber Leon preserved traditional open-blade shaving and a gentleman’s perfume and tobacco shop. Later, Barber Kenneth worked here from the age of fourteen until eighty-five, carrying its rituals across decades without losing their soul.

ROMAIN restored the interior with restraint and continues the practice today. Coupure is also the Ghent campus of Scapicchio Academy, welcoming barbers from around the world to learn shaving and honing where history is still alive.
